The HJ-12 is a man-portable multipurpose fire and forget anti-tank missile equipped with a dual guidance system, either an infrared imaging seeker or a TV imaging seeker, giving it all-weather day-and-night capability. Its light weight allows it to be shoulder-fired, similar to the FGM-148 Javelin, the French Akeron MP or Israeli Spike systems, providing infantry with a weapon with high destructive power against any type of vehicle and infrastructure. Of course, the system has a launch tripod and is easily installed on any ground vehicle. Its ease of use allows reloading after firing in just 15 seconds.

The Red Arrow 12 is a compact system weighing only 22 kg. It consists of the missile, packaged in a sealed container weighing 17 kg, and the reusable CLU (Command Launch Unit), which weighs only 5 kg. Like other current missiles, it features a “soft launch” system, which ejects the missile forward about 20 meters before the missile’s booster motors ignite, allowing it to be used in confined spaces. The launch tube measures 1.20 meters long and has a diameter of 170 mm, while the missile itself is 0.98 meters long and has a diameter of 135 mm. The range is determined by the type of guidance selected. The TV system is used in daytime operations and has a maximum range of 4,000 meters. The IR imaging seeker allows use in any weather environment, both day and night, but its range is only 2,000 meters.

HJ-12 missile is a fire-and-forget missile with a lock-on before launch (LOBL) system, allowing the operator to select the target before firing, confident that once fired, the missile will relentlessly home in on it, allowing the operator to quickly change position or select another target. This system has two selectable attack modes: “top-attack” and “direct-attack.” The first mode is ideal for attacking main battle tanks, as the impact will be on the vehicle’s roof after a higher flight. The second mode directs the missile on a lower direct flight toward the target without making any final dive. The missile is equipped with a 8.4 kg multipurpose HEAT tandem shaped hollow charge warhead capable of penetrating up to 800 mm of steel armor behind ERA, a figure somewhat lower than its Western and Russian contemporaries.

Red Arrow 12 system was unveiled after a 14-year development period. According to some sources, this work began in 2000, and for nearly 10 years, development encountered serious problems adapting the software, hardware, and graphics processing for application in domestic defense products. However, after intensive work, they were able to unveil this new missile in 2014, which finally entered production in 2020. Initially, the HJ-12 missile was developed for the export market under designation “GAM-100 missile”, a fairly common practice for Chinese defense companies. However, the missile’s excellent performance led the People’s Liberation Army Ground Force to incorporate a variant based on the HJ-12E, a cheaper export version, in 2021.

The HJ-12 anti-tank missile is being progressively deployed with units of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA), which used it for the first time during exercises held in July 2021 in the Tibet region. In March 2020, Algeria placed an order, and in late 2022, Indonesia signed an agreement with China to develop a missile based on HJ-12 technology. Although this missile is intended for developing countries, its price remains high, although in 2023 the Emirati media “Al Jundi Journal” stated that a complete HJ-12E system only cost $18,000, while the missiles themselves only cost $7,000 each, something hardly credible compared to other similar systems today.
